I too had never heard of male and female eggplants till today. But, as an agronomist, I'm pretty sure that there's no such thing as male or female eggplants as they are a fruit (they result from sex but don't have a sex). In fact each eggplant flower have both female and male parts and are self pollinating so they don't need other flower to produce fruit. The fruit is produced when pollen from the flower's male organs (stamen and anthers) comes in contact with the female organ (stigma) either by insect activity or wind. The pollen then goes down a tube below the stigma (style) and into the ovary, that, if everything goes as planed, will become the fruit.

Thank you so much, this was very interesting. I was actually born in Spain (I'm not telling you what year though!) but was moved around europe and finally settled in Britain when I was 6. I dont remember much of the few years I was in spain, but the smell of spanish food always seems to get me going or something. It's weird how I dont remember anything except the smells, isn't it! I even found a whole website dedicated to spanish recipes, which gave me great delight and thought I really should to share with your readers. Anyway, thank you again. I'll get my husband to add your cast to my rss thing...
